Part Two of the Torture Debate

Yesterday, we noted a horrible new round of photos of the Abu Ghraib prison torture of Iraqi detainees by members of the American military. Today, we spotlight a powerful package of arguments against the use of torture, published by the Washington Monthly. Everyone from senior military leaders to theology students sounds off against permitting the use of torture by American security forces. In the introduction, the editors sum it up nicely: "What once was shocking is now ordinary." Those words will serve as the real epitaph of this uniquely disastrous U.S. presidential administration. Anyway, I urge you to read this. And while we're on the subject, let's once again celebrate the bravery of a real American hero: Joe Darby, the young soldier once stationed at Abu Ghraib, who blew the whistle on his abusive comrades, receiving nothing but abuse and threats for doing the right thing. We spotlighted him four years ago.
