Photo & Video Day

It's Sunday, so we don't want you to have to work too hard today. So rather than make you read, you can just look at images today.

We've always gotten a kick out of the silly photos that routinely accompany stories about the stock market's gyrations on any particular day. You know the kind we mean--photos of people looking visibly worried or even shaken when the market plunges, and looking celebratory when it goes up. So we found this gallery of market-reaction photos by the German news mag Der Spiegel especially interesting. Meanwhile, to mark the magazine's 25th anniversary, Vanity Fair brings you their 25 top news photos.

Meanwhile, here are a few videos that we've found interesting recently. Actor Matt Damon thinks the Sarah Palin candidacy "is like a bad Disney movie." You've no doubt heard and read about the infamous "Joe the Plumber," but may not have seen the original videotape of his encounter with Obama. One frustrated and articulate young Northeast Ohioan has a plan to secede from the rest of the state. And in our favorite video of the week (courtesy of our old JCUer friend Ann, whom we thank for flagging it for us), we're encouraged to consider who's acting like a...well, just watch it.

Oh my. I'll be passing along that last video for sure.

Yes, that last one is pretty damn good, isn't it. The music and lyrics can be a tad hypnotic, and easy to listen to more than once. And of course it doesn't hurt that the underlying message is on point.

Agreed...the Paul Hipp video is hilarious. And as for the "Joe the Plumber" video, Fox news usually just annoys me but if anything, that clip made me want to vote for Obama more than I did before...clearly not what Fox intended.

Never heard of Paul Hipp before, but he's now achieved some minor fame. And good point about Fox, the propaganda organization pretending to be a news network.

But if you are a conservative republican, where else do you go to hear "your side" of things? I go there sometimes just to make sure I have considered both sides of a question. The network, at times, suits this task perfectly, so even though it is not my first "go to" choice, I am glad it is there. As it did with Theresa, their more extreme views (and occasionally their obnoxious behavior, i.e. can you let the interviewee ANSWER the question already????) help to solidify my opinions. Sometimes they are SO defensive it helps me see a weakness in their reasoning.

Good point. You're right.

OMG! I loved the secede plan it was great and I think that Mike should be invited on HBO's New Rules to share it with more people.

The last video was also something to re-visit, catchy tune and folksy lyrics perfect for a camp fire in Alaska.

Matt Damon is one of my favorite actor and it is a joy to see that he is also articulate and capable of expressing what so many thinks and can not say that Sarah is far more scary then McCain.

Again a fun visit! Thanks John.
