I've enjoyed reading Michener, but I admired him after reading a story about him in an in-flight magazine.
He arrived at a location for one of his books with nothing more than a suitcase. He acquired all the references he needed on site.
After completing his book, he donated all his materials to a local university.
He then moved on, carrying nothing more than a suitcase.
That's traveling light.
Ah, the prodigal returns. How good to see you back after a long vacation, Bluster. Michener was indeed an interesting guy. I believe he was an orphan who was later adopted, so his professional wanderlust might well have been tied to that early trauma. Either way, he left most of his wealth, many millions of dollars, to his alma mater, Swarthmore College, in repayment for a $2,000 scholarship he received. That's pretty impressive, and not a bad legacy for anyone.
