A Few Of Our Favorite (and Least Favorite) Things
  • The best magazine subscription come-on of the week, month and year, from The Nation: "We're like Fox News. Only Smart. And not crazy. And we don't lie. Click here for 4 free issues."
  • The silliest academic mumbo jumbo we've seen in quite awhile: Womanist Theology.
  • Glad to see we're not the only ones who hate those infernal traffic cameras the City of Cleveland uses to nab scofflaws. To us, they merely provide one more reason not to head downtown.
  • Some recent Seth Godin wisdom, on the need to occasionally push yourself by sprinting.

At the bottom of the traffic camera article there was a link to an article on pond scum, which struck me as too funny to pass up. It was really interesting, and I had to pass on this quote:

"Meanwhile, the university acquired the algae collection in 1976. The samples' roots are traced to 1939, when scientist Ernst G. Pringsheim fled Prague ahead of the Nazis, leaving behind most of his belongings but taking his algae collection."

Now that's dedication!!

Anyways, we expect you to take good notes for us on that lecture on Womanist Theology. Since you were such the BLGOC (Big Literary Guy on Campus), don't you get discounts on such enlightening fare, or a press pass or something?

Great sprinting idea . . Gotta run!

We like first-time commenters, Nora, so welcome. And no, I wasn't a big anything on campus in college, with the possible exception of big-admirer-of-pretty-girls-whom-I-never-could-quite-work-up-the-nerve-to-talk-to. So no discounts or press passes.

I think I would like to invite the publicist of The Nation to Thanksgiving with our family just to add such delicious effervescent conversation to the menu!

Stan, I always love your comments, and love that you keep coming back to add to the conversation. But I sure wish I knew who you were (since you've said before that I know you). I suppose Stan is just a nom de plum. Your use of the word "effervescent" did briefly raise our suspicions that you could perhaps be a pal whom we spent some time with only yesterday, since I happened to use that very word in a subsequent thank you email. Okay, enough intrigue for today. No matter who you might be, we love you all the same!

John, dissing the home team with the Womanist Theolgy comment? Not very nice. I wonder how many words they will devote to the seminar recap in next months alumni mag...

Now there's a welcome name in the comments. Good to see you back here, future Tim Russert (Capitol Hill aide turned newsman). As for dissing our alma mater, I take zero pleasure in that. Poor John Carroll seems so lost on so many levels that I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever find its way back to the path. You should never count the Jesuits out, but then, how much Jesuit influence really remains there? Only a sliver, I fear. As for space in the alumni mag, that's been cut severely (along with just about everything else at the place; I'm told the faculty will soon take up a vote to cut their pay 4% across the board), so I wouldn't expect much space devoted to that.
