I thought my son might be addicted to video games so I gave him more chores to do after he finished his homework on the nights he's not working. Not delighted about it, I invited him to the door (he's over 18) and welcomed him to a taste of the real world.

He's still a gamer, but now takes pride in all he can do and thinks his friends that live for gaming are losers. He's making new friends and has inspired some of the old ones to change their ways. Besides, my wife's a great cook and they'd miss some good eats and you know how growing boys feel about that.

Damn. I wish I'd known of that hormonal link earlier - it might have saved me a lot of money. I just bought some jewelry last week that I "had" to have and look at it now and wonder, "What was I thinking?"

Maybe next month I'll pull it out with a giggle and enjoy the sparkle. Now that I'm a little wiser your tidbit will be passed on to my galpals if they comment on my ornamental self. It'll be good for a few cackles.

Very interesting. No matter how much they're addicted to video games, most boys of that age are even more entranced by food.

Never having been into that stuff, I'm often amazed at how much time even perfectly sane adults spend on playing video games. With lots of down time on their hands, some professional athletes, for instance, are known for spending inordinate amounts of time gaming.

There may be a saving grace here, though. I recall a few years ago interviewing a surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic who's among the world's leading people doing laproscopic surgery, which involves operating with instruments through relative pinhole incisions in the body. The talent requires a form of dexterity not unlike that called for in video games, and he explained that doctors who grew up playing a lot of video games seem to more easily master this form of surgery, which requires far less invasiveness of the patient's body, resulting in far less tissue and nerve trauma. So it can have its uses.

Thanks for that insight from the trenches, dear solo voice of the sisterhood. That's a pretty imaginative nickname, and I'm going down my mental list of who you might be. I've settled on a friend with the initials CP as perhaps the likeliest candidate.
