I Prefer Reading

'People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading.'
--Logan Pearsall Smith. This line brought to mind an earlier sentiment from Marcel Proust.

I agree with Kass: art is life and life is art. They each inform the other. To read is to live, to live is to read.

Happy New Year, John. Thanks for your wisdom.

I am happy to agree with Kass and Elisabeth, you can't have one bout t'other. Neither's perfect though and the grass is always greener which is why I suppose I keep jumping between the two.

Have a good New Year when it comes, John.

And you also, Jim. Here's hoping I can one day enjoy a pint with you in Scotland.

The other quote that comes to mind here is from novelist Jerzy Kozinski: "Novels are a rehearsal for life." That's from an interview he gave in the NY Times Magazine back in the 70s or so. I've never forgotten it.

I think Kozinski was making the point, in the interview, that we can learn a lot about life, relationships, and people, from reading, but that in the end it all comes back to living a life.
